CITY OF HOUSTON'S FIRST GREEN ROOF

It features the City’s first green roof installation and is one of the City’s first design/build projects.  This 25-year old civic facility houses six interdepartmental users, all with different needs.  SpawGlass invited English + Associates to join them as design/build partners for this critical project.  The repair of existing portions of the facility that had not been properly performing followed a lengthy deliberation period regarding the building’s future.  The project team recognized the need for reconstructing certain problematic portions of the building that would continue to be long-term maintenance issues if not addressed.  Our team delivered a solution that felt like a building remodel, within the context of a building repair.  The project was completed in the original budget and time frame, through the strategic selection of materials and components.  Part of this scope included the complete removal and replacement of the Level 1 slab and utilities.  Careful scheduling and project phasing allowed the facility to remain open and code-compliant at all times, including the exit-way for the 24-hour juvenile detention unit, located on the upper floors, as well as one ground-floor courtroom.
