UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS SCHOOL EXPANSION
11,395 ft²
English + Associates undertook this study to explore the challenges and opportunities inherent to constructing a new building in the heart of an existing campus. Critical planning issues included ways to improve pedestrian walking paths and ways to allow vehicle access to the building, as well as strategies to integrate the new design into the context of the existing buildings while honoring the campus’ original master plan.
Design options, developed in Revit (BIM) for ease of modification, respond to the unique characteristics of the campus by creating a sense of entry to the Communications building and decentralizing the circulation patterns to achieve an outwardly-focused design. Materials matching those of the existing campus, including the use of limestone, glass storefront and plaster, are massed in a form that compliments the adjacent performance theatre and extends the current “front porch” of the building.
