Kingham Dalton Wilson (KDW) is a successful Houston-area developer of office and industrial projects.  KDW needed a new office and challenged English + Associates to provide a space that would, through the architecture, inform and educate their clients on the process KDW uses to deliver their projects.  This required a space that was informative, open, and highly collaborative.  Conceptually, this was an investigation into how the workspace is changing – an “office of the future” exploration.  KDW sought a non-traditional workspace, something other than the typical “doors along a hallway” planning approach.  An open, free-form work surface that starts in the reception area and continues through a resource library and work areas allows KDW to have meaningful interaction with their clients.  The work surface is a collaborative tool that allows for a step-by-step education of the design/build process and is the backbone of the office library and showroom that displays many building elements used in their construction projects.  Designing an office for varied activities while also being a teaching space and showroom challenged English + Associates to create a stimulating space while maintaining a work space that is process driven and cohesive.  The creation of the continuous work surface was the key to solving this challenge.
